Great book, definitely worth the read. I was on a cross-country flight a few years ago when I found this book at my feet. I figured someone in a seat near must have dropped it and it slid, but no one claimed it. So, I got curious and began reading it. The book was so good, I didn't pull my nose out of it until the flight had landed! I was hooked. As we were de-boarding the plane, I asked one more time if anyone had lost a book, and someone ended up claiming it. I liked it so much, however, that I immediately ordered it on Amazon so that I could finish it, and then I passed it on to a friend who also enjoyed it. :)
Monster is an incredibly graphic depiction of the life of young men (boys) who live in Los Angeles. A person growing up outside of this environment cannot fully understand the mentality or way of life which is take one of ours we take two from you. these kids ride bikes and go to school, to recruit and put in work. Some of these kids come from intact families most not but Monster provides insight into this other world.
WOW, VERY POWERFUL. Easy reading and allows the reader a better understanding of L.A. life. It does not get graphic, but instead gives the "outsider" a better understanding of what it is like to live around, in, and out of the gang life in Los Angeles.
Dig dis demonstration here, homie....i read dis joint & I loved it. I got so much luv & respect for Sanyika because his story is so similar to mine and it's damn near impossible to shift gears n life and so many of us never get a chance to. I really enjoyed the story telling, the way I was transported to South Central & I'm from Chicago! But the author painted dis picture wit colorful strokes dat engaged my mind & spirit. Da struggle continues......
I have read this book a number of times over the past few years and it never feels out of date. Incredibly heartfelt and eye opening.
A fascinating book about a sociapathic gangster. If you're looking for a lurid description of L.A. gang life and history then this book is a classic. However, it is nothing like the autobiography of Malcolm X. While the autobiography of Malcolm X had a social conscience, Kody Scott doesn't seem to have any guilt for the crimes he committed.
Another look inside the Crips culture in Southern California. The Monster POV is that of a kid caught up in the lethal rivalries between Crips and Bloods, and more often, other sets of Crips. If you want an inside look-see at a life you'd never want to live and will find hard to believe takes place in America; well, eye opener. Monster was written years ago, and the gang culture has changed, from nightly drive-by shootings and turf wars, now more focus on "getting rich or die trying."
Kody was a tremendous individual in the gang world, shows and proves that even the hardest of the best of them relate to the bystanding civilians that get caught up in the termoil of the ghettos dramas..We need more leaders to rise up like him in both, the afro and hispanic communities.
