Review

The is THE one book you need to get started as a blacksmith. The New Edge of the Anvil is a revised and expanded edition of Andrews' earlier and most successful book. I urge all my students to buy, read, use and then reread this book. Clear words, excellent pictures, good explanations, tables, charts...all you need to encourage you to pick up a hammer and start hammering. The new sections include wonderful pictures of historical ironwork (go practice making some of these!) and then the directions that six contemporary smiths are taking. I confess that I am one of these smiths, and that I have known the author for years. Because this is such a good resource, it is wonderful to be able to recommend it heartily without our friendship compromised. Buy it! -- Nol Putnam from The Plains, Virginia, USA, May 20, 1999

Bought this book to learn a little about blacksmithing. I did, but was looking for more detail into how things work. I am a machinist and a welder, looking into doing some blacksmithing at home, and i was disappointed. As a resource i guess it is ok, if you want specifics ths book doesnt have themContent was great i was just looking to get more from the book. I would recomend this book to someone that is looking into the basics of smithing. The best part of the book to me was the heat treatment section, great detail and information in this section

This book comes in two parts: One part is good basic information useful to the newcomer to the craft and the other covers work of master blacksmiths.Regarding the former part, some of the information is a little too basic. It assumes that you know absolutely nothing. But most of the information will be useful to the person learning blacksmithing and much it will be a useful reference to keep coming back to. I know that I will get a lot of use of this book over the coming years.I'll almost did not buy this book because of the second part and that would have been a mistake. I read the reviews decrying this part of the book as an "art book" and I thought to myself that this part would be just wasted paper for someone that is still relatively low on the learning curve. I was wrong. What I found, upon reading through this section is a wealth of ideas and ways to do things. I will probably never approach the skill level of these artists, but there is plenty here that the masters can teach me -- provided that I make the effort to learn from them.

This is a must read book for any aspiring blacksmith. It is to the point, well written and informative. Covers everything from techniques to shop arrangement for an efficient workflow.

I gave this 3 stars because this book is not easy to read and I was very disappointed with it. Yes this book has a lot of good information from shop set up to tools and a few drawings however I felt it went from the super basic like iron is hot and will burn you to advanced with out great detailed steps much to quickly. As another stated if this were used in a class situation it would be one of the best books available. I do recommend that any one into blacksmithing read this book but I felt that better detailed instructions and less pictures of pretty work at the end. the pretty pictures were great but if they detailed how those things were made would have been awesome.

Jack was a mentor as well as an excellent craftsman. With this revised edition, you can also benefit from his enormous experience and clear communication of the craft.

I enrolled in a blacksmithing course and wanted a book to familiarize myself with the tools and methods I would encounter at the school. I don't believe I could have picked a better book for my purposes. Leave for North Carolina today for the class and am now really looking forward to it as I am now at least familiar with the basics.

While this has some good info on the business of artistic blacksmithing, it's not a technical book by any stretch of the imagination. I really prefer Bealer's "Art of Blacksmithing" over this one.

I am new to blacksmithing, and bought this book as my first reference based on high recommendations here and elsewhere. I have found the book to be written in a style that is confusing for me. The author clearly knows blacksmithing, and wants to tell about it, but his style is very non-linear, and does not deliver the information to me in a way I can understand and use. I have tried just reading the book from the beginning, and I find myself feeling like the author is just telling me random tidbits, without regard for their context or their importance. It feels like wandering around a classroom and reading sections of the chalkboard after a good class- it is interesting, but makes me wish I had been there for the lecture. I have also tried using the book as a reference, looking up a subject about which I have a specific question, like heat treating, and instead of being able to find the information I am looking for, I find myself caught up in a confusing ramble around the subject that doesn't quite tell me what I need to know. The best use for the book for me has been as a random source of ideas. If I open the book to any page, I am likely to find a drawing or description of some useful tool or other nice piece I would love to make, as soon as I can find the knowledge and techniques I need- but I am going to have to find them in some other book.
